Care of the Older Adult focuses on both comprehensive and episodic/focused health assessments. The focus of this course is on health promotion and illness prevention strategies (e.g., screening, immunization, exercise), as well as management of common chronic conditions and geriatric syndromes that place the older adult at risk and impact on quality of life. Examples of topics include medications (including de-prescribing), infections, falls, pain, delirium, dementia, depression, restraint use, abuse/ neglect, sleep problems, end of life/palliative care. Assessment of normal age-related changes, and interventions are integrated throughout each module.

Thirteen individual, self-directed study modules are offered through an online, self-directed and self-paced format along with post-tests to assess learning. Tests may be completed as many times as required to achieve a passing grade.

This course presents an overview of the most current guidelines and tools related to health in the older adult using web based resources and supported by a required textbook with a focus on older adult care.

While designed to meet the learning needs of Advance Practice Nurses, i.e., Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists, this course would be of value also for Registered Nurses who are preparing for or have completed CNA gerontological certifications (GNC(C)). Re-certification contact hours are 78 hours (6 hours x 13 modules) for this course.
